NOVEMBER 2021: PEOPLE OF HICO – MATTHIAS BURRI, BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE CONSULTANT

Publication date: 22 November 2021

The HICO family keeps expanding! Let’s give a warm welcome to Matthias Burri, the newest member of our HICO-Group from Switzerland. He is optimistic, solution-oriented, and passionate about modern technologies. Fun fact: he also lives with five cats! All the right traits a BI Consultant should have, don’t you agree? Let’s read his People of HICO story here.

Could you tell us a bit more about Matthias Burri, the person? Where are you from? Where do you live? What interests you, all that?

Of course! I’m from Switzerland and currently live in the beautiful town of Lucerne, although we will soon move to the countryside in the just as beautiful canton Aargau.

About my interests, hmm… I love the possibilities the internet and our modern technologies give us – the weather channel, the shopping mall, an entire encyclopedia, and so much more. Everything is available right in the palm of our hand, allowing us to save time on chores and spend more time enjoying life.

Can you describe your journey to becoming a BI Consultant?

I actually ended up in Business Intelligence without even realizing it during my first job. I just fell in love with it and have stuck with it ever since. The company I previously worked at was actually a HICO-Group partner, which, in turn, eventually led to me joining HICO.

So far, what is your favorite thing about HICO?

The people! Everyone is incredibly welcoming and I’m happy to be part of HICO.

I also love the possibility of learning “on the job”. There’s a certain pleasure in finding solutions to issues that plagued you for hours – which also pushes you to learn more about the software.

What would you say is the greatest challenge in your line of work? Aaand… how do you deal with challenges on most days?

I’d say it’s the challenge of implementation. There are many ways to implement something, and it can be challenging to find the best way for every situation. Dealing with this comes mostly down to thinking outside the box as well as experience but in collaboration with other colleagues from HICO, finding solutions is never an issue.

Could you give us a specific example of a “job well done” in your line of work?

Whenever a project has been finished on time and contains all the bells and whistles the customer asked for (and maybe even more).

In your opinion, what is a major change or new trend you expect to see in your job in the next 10 years? Is there something today that indicates it or is it just your “hunch”?

Automation. I think lots of things, such as the creation of reports or the processing of data, will become more and more automated. We can already see this with tools enabling users to create tailor-made charts and visualisations based on keywords in our data or previous components we created.

Name someone in your industry whose content you really enjoy following.

I really enjoy following “Guy in a Cube” on Youtube. It’s fun to see all the great possibilities they come up with to improve the experience in Power BI and how easily they can be implemented.

That sounds cool. Aaand… subscribed!

And now… time for some Rapid Fire Questions! Please try to make your responses to the following questions short and to the point. Sounds good?

What is the most interesting thing you’ve read this week?

An interview with J. R. R. Tolkien about the writing process of the Lord of the Rings books.

What is the most interesting job you’ve ever had?

I had an internship in a law enforcement agency and was able to observe the questioning of suspects and witnesses. It was very interesting to see the actual stories behind the newspaper articles.

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Calm. Friendly. Reliable.

What is one thing about you that people would be surprised to know?

The number of cats we have at home. We live with five of them. 🙂

If you could choose only one thing about you that everyone should know, what would it be?

I’m a peace-loving person that is eager to find solutions instead of causing problems.

Name someone whose work/life you find inspiring.

I can’t really name a single person, but I generally find inspiration in people who – against all odds – are able to make their dreams come true, be it founding a business, authoring a book, or similar feats.

What is one thing you learned during this year that you are most proud of?

After barely having read any books in the last few years, I learned of Brandon Sanderson who rekindled my love of reading (although I still have a lot of catching up to do 🙂 ).

If you could visit one place on Earth, where would you go and why?

Lake Cauma (or any similar idyllic place, really). Nature in such places is incredibly relaxing.

Where would you go right now if you were invisible?

I guess I might sneak off to search for those idyllic places. 🙂

Name one thing you really COULD NOT live without.

The internet. I use it for everything – from checking the weather to ordering train tickets or listening to music.

Name one thing you really COULD live without.

Noise. In our modern life, there are so many sounds that it can be hard to find peace unless you go far out into nature.

Favorite movie?

Avengers.

Favorite TV show?

The Witcher.

Favorite food?

Riz Casimir.

Most exciting piece of technology.

Smartphones and everything they can do these days.

What are you looking forward to the most in 2022?

Enjoying our new home in the countryside and working alongside my HICO team members.

As a reward to our readers for reading ’til the end, please share your best piece of advice.

Don’t worry too much about things you can’t change and focus on the things you can change.
